CHEONNAE SMOKE-SIGNAL STATION IN HWAJEONG Print
(682-090) Hwajeong-dong, Dong-Gu, Ulsan(Tour/Vestiges)
The smoke-signal station, which is located on the ridge of the mountain and has a clear view of the area, is an ancient form of military communication. It informs distant camps (other smoke-signal stations) of an emergency of the outer area, by relaying the messages with a torch at night and smoke in the day. It seems to have been the system used during the Goryeo period, and the system was later institutionalized during the reign of the King Sejong of the Joseon period.
Five generals and soldiers were stationed here. It is said that one torch was lit when there was no alarm, two torches when enemies appeared, three when they approached near the frontier, four when they crossed the frontier, and five when they were in close combat. This system was discontinued with the spread of the telephone in 1894 (the 31st year of the King Gojong's reign).
The Cheonnae Smoke-signal Station is located at the top of Bonghwasan(Mt. Bonghwa, 120 meters above the sea). It was at the center of the beacon network that guarded Ulsan Bay, received messages from Garisan(Mt. Gari) and sent them to Nammokcheon(what is now, Jujeon). It, with an 8-m-wide, 7.5-m-tall stone furnace, was enclosed by an earthen wall in a circle of 25 meters in diameter.
